In 1979, American toy company Kenner released a Boba Fett action figure that could fire missiles. The hand-painted bounty hunter was supposed to be a gift for fans who had collected at least four other Star Wars figures.
But before it was released, executives decided to remove the launcher, which could pose a potential hazard to children due to the small parts.
For this reason, children never got to launch Boba Fett’s missiles. However, a few clever Kenner employees saved the prototypes of the toy and took them home. Now, one of these rare figures has become the most expensive vintage toy in the world. This week, Heritage Auctions announced its sale.
The 3.75-inch tall figure sold for $525,000, beating the previous record holder, the only Barbie doll with a diamond necklace, which sold for $302,500 in 2010. Jewelry designer Stefano Canturi worked on the luxury Barbie for six months.
